The Romans had a word for the kind of speed that lives in a body: velox. The soldier closing ground. The deer that heard something in the trees. The runner on the last lap with nothing left to save.
Where the word comes from, no one is completely sure. Most scholars trace it to the wind. Others trace it to an older root meaning strong, lively, awake. English found its way to the same idea: quick meant alive long before it meant fast.
Speed was never a cold measure of distance over time. It was a direct expression of raw vital energy, power, and being fully alive.
CICERO TOOK IT FURTHER.
“Nothing is swifter than the soul.”
— CICERO
Anyone who has raced knows he was right. The thought to ease off always shows up before the legs give out. The mind gets there first.
DURUS asked how long you could stay in it: six hours, with the course growing larger every 2 hours.
VELOCIS asks something else. Three hours, and every loop shorter than the last. The laps come faster, the gap between decisions closes, and there’s less and less room to talk ourselves out of anything.
THE COURSE
One course. Three loops. Each one shorter.
Hour one on the large loop. Hour two on the medium. Hour three on the small. The laps come faster as the clock runs down.
There will be a podium. There will be winners. Come to race.
Endurance is a negotiation. Speed doesn’t leave time for one.
Somewhere in the third hour, breathing hard enough to hear the wind in it, we find out which one arrives first: the part of us that wants to go, or the part that wants to stop.

Three ways in.
Individual, 2-person and 4-person teams. Same three hours. Same shrinking loop.
Individual
$130 PER ATHLETE
You, the clock, and every loop shorter than the last.
2-Person Team
$250 PER TEAM
Trade laps. Half the rest, twice the pressure to go.
4-Person Team
$480 PER TEAM
Four legs, one three-hour clock. Nobody gets to coast.
